Review Summary
This book was mainly about a group of colonists who land on a planet they are to inhabit and are cut off from any resources of earth as well as communication to and from earth. At first everything is running smoothly until Sallah Telgar uncovers some interesting facts about one of her fellow pilots-- Avril Bitra. Avril is planning to gather up anything on this planet that may make her rich on another already inhabited planet.

As she is plotting this, Sallah pursues Avi, a man older than she is but more lovable in a way that no one else can be to Sallah. However more problems arise while these problems are batling it out, this new planet has a cloud-like mass that travels the planet and rains down grub-like things that consume everything in their path. At first it seems that this is a threat that cannot be fought but then a small dragon creature which they name fire-lizards are found out to be able to breath fire which in turn destroys the grub-like creatures that are called thread.

Lessa waited 10 long years in hiding for her chance to reclaim her birthright. As the last of the Ruathan blood, she must hide her true identity or be killed by Fax, the usurper who killed all of her kin and claimed Ruatha Hold for his own. When the dragonrider, F'lar, comes on search for some likely candidates to impress dragons, Lessa knew that her time had come. Unfortunately, her plans did not go quite the way she wanted them to and she ends up in Benden Weyr, where she impresses the Queen dragon, the beautiful Ramoth. Even though Lessa is now Weyrwoman and dragonrider, her troubles are far from over. The dragons live to kill thread, deadly spores that fall from the sky and eat every living thing in their paths. But thread have not fallen for over 400 Turns and the people of Pern no longer want to support the dragonriders, of which few are left. F'lar is convinced that the thread will fall again - and soon. Can F'lar and Lessa mobilize the forces of Pern to fight the deadly forces of thread and survive?

Dragonflight is the first book in Anne McCaffrey's highly acclaimed Dragonriders of Pern series. She carefully eases you into the world of Pern and the reader has no trouble visualizing the planet and its people. McCaffrey also has a nice, easy to understand writing style that will make this book popular among young adults and adults alike. Her characters are engaging and anyone will root for the stubborn, opinionated Lessa and her all-too-perfect mate, F'lar. Readers will also love the fact that this book is the start of a long series and that, even though F'lar and Lessa are not the main characters of all of them, they figure into most of them so feel free to get attached to them!

Lessa, was born into a noble family, but upon their slaying was forced to hide in her home as a slave (called drudge in the book.) Upon F'lar's(secondary main character) arrival, she is found to have the abilities inherant to become a Weyrwoman, leader of the Weyr of fighting dragons.
F'lar belives a natural occurence called "Thread" is going to fall once more on the planet Pern, and that they are desperately underforced, having only one weyr of fighting dragons. Will Lessa and F'lar piece together the clues they need to survive Pern, it's politics and Thread?

Tori , Resident Scholar

Lessa, once heir to the Holdership of Ruatha, has been deposed and made to work as a drudge (servant, slave) for the current Holder, Fax. She's been plotting revenge for years, and thinks she's got a way to get it when the Dragonriders come to visit. However, they identify her talent and take her off to become Weyrwoman of Bendan Weir. Lessa must learn to control her dragons and her community - and, when the Thread starts falling, she and her consort F'lar must do something about that, too.
Ivy, Resident Scholar

This is the first of the series, and is the story of how Lessa became Weyrwoman of the dragons, and the story of how they fight the evil Threads. The Threads, which took way too long to find out what they are, eat through anything organic and fall once every 200 years.
Keith C, Resident Scholar

F'lar goes on Search to find a suitable female to ride the new golden queen dragon.
