The Nightmare Imbrium must go to king Trent and give him a message from the Night Stallion. She unknowingly finds the horeseman and is caught by him but escapes. When she gets to Castle Roogna, King Trent as well as his sucessors dissappear untill finally leaving it up to Mare Imbrium to not only save them but to defeat the horseman and save Xanth.

Imbri is a night mare recently turned day mare. She bears a message to the king to "Beware the Horseman" and "Break the Chain". He did not the warning seriously enough, and now Xanth is facing the Nextwave of Mundanes without their experienced king.
