Smash the Ogre goes questing for his Answer accompanied by Tandy and other accumulating females. Along the way, they discover new features of Xanth, including the dangerous hypno-gourd world. Smash must protect and deliver each of the women from threatening situations, while trying to recover his soul from the gourd world ruler, the Night Stallion.
