Review Summaries
"In 1996 a disease wiped out nearly the whole population. A man is sent back to try to prevent the disaster. At first he is sent back too far and is put in a mental institution. He meets a psychiatrist and a mental patient. He returns to the future so he can be sent back to the right time. He meets up with the psychiatrist and together they try to stop the disease. They also discover that the other mental patient may be involved in the plot of the terrible disease."
Jack Bauer, Resident Scholar

"This film, inspired by the French short film "La Jetee" is an eccentric work of Terry Gilliam (Formerly of Monty Python and Director of Baron Munchausen), that depicts a man who faces persecution, and is committed after being sent from a disease ravaged future, to bring back information in hopes of preventing a viral terrorist act suspected of being carried out in 1997 by a group called the army of the twelve monkeys. The film shows his journey and relationship with a psychiatrist, and simultaneously unravels the truth behind the terrorist act, and the sanity of Willis' protagonist."
Stable Table, Resident Scholar

"Willis is the hero searching for a virus that wipes out mankind, so that he may return it the future and the scientists can work out a cure. Stowe is the skeptical psychiatrist who helps him and eventually loves him. Are humans destroying Earth, and what will be the price?"
Paul Iversen, Resident Scholar

"A mysterious virus wiped out most of the world's population in 1996, and by 2035 the survivors are living in underground quarters. James Cole (Willis), a convict and therefore expendable, is sent back to 1996 to find out what happened and try to stop it, with little information other than the disaster involved something called "The Army of the Twelve Monkeys." His time travel goes haywire and he lands in 1990 instead and is soon locked up as crazy. Dr. Kathryn Railly (an earnest Stowe) attempts to treat him, Jeffrey Goines (a pretty good Pitt) is the wild-eyed son of a famous scientist and viral expert, an animal activist, and a possible ally or enemy. After Brazil, Baron Munchausen, and the Fisher King, Terry Gilliam directed this arresting thriller inspired by the 28-minute, post-apocalyptic French film (made up mostly of black-and-white stills) made in 1962, "La Jetee.""
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
