"If you love to see things you've never seen before in your life, this movie will do the trick. Following their 1991 black comedy-fantasy "Delicatessen," the French writing and directing team Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet cooked up a surreal cross between Dickens and Terry Gilliam's "Brazil." Krank, the mad scientist who shares quarters -- a sort of oil drilling platform in the ocean -- with five clones stricken with sleeping sickness and a disembodied brain in a tank (which narrates the tale), cannot dream and fears this condition will end his life prematurely. So he goes about kidnapping children and stealing their dreams in the hope of thus prolonging his life. One of his prisoners is the little brother of One, a former whale hunter (Perlman, known in this country for the 1987 TV series "Beauty and the Beast") who now works the streets of the city as a carnival strong man. One hunts for his lost sibling with the help of a little female artful dodger named Miette. Though the plot -- such as it is -- is a bit hard to follow, this visually and thematically dark film has deteriorating, post-apocalyptic sets and an absolutely unique and fantastic vision. (The opening sequence is an especially wonderful antidote for those who are sick of Santa-infested Christmases!)
