Review Summary
Auron is a scaleless young dragon who lives in a world populated with elves, dwarfs, and humans, mostly hostile to his species. Auron is only a hatchling who cannot yet fly or breathe fire, which, combined with his having no scales, leaves him more vulnerable than his littermates. However, gray dragons like him who do not covet gold are considered a rarity, so Auron is the pride of the litter.

Auron, his brother and two sisters live in a dragon cave with their parents, on whom they completely depend for food and protection. One day, when their father is away, Auron's brother betrays the family. A group of slave-trading dwarfs and elves bursts into the cave and kills Auron's mother and one of his sisters. Unable to fight, Auron distracts the hunters so that his other sister, Wistala, can get away. He is captured, but later a friendly elf pities the young dragon and releases him. Now alone in the world, Auron sets out to search for his species and to understand who and why wants to destroy them.

His journey takes him to many places and gives him a chance to get to know other races more closely. He becomes friends with a dwarf, and they guard a trading caravan together. Then Auron finds a human girl, an orphan without friends or protection, just like he used to be. Auron takes of her for a while and grows to love her, but then decides that he must return her to humans. The separation is rather hard, so when another human-like race called blighters accepts Auron he stays to live with them, temporarily forsaking his quest.

The blighters, he learns, used to dominate the world, but now their race is on the verge of extinction – just like his. Auron becomes their leader, and his reign is good for the blighters, making their lives better and safer. However, he decides to leave when he learns that a human, a wizard who had killed his mother and sister, has begun a full-scale war to exterminate all the other races and create a human-only world. The wizard uses captured dragons, and Auron sets off to rescue them – as well as the rest of the threatened world.
