Review Summary
Caustic radio therapist Jack Black takes his daughter Ashley and his teenage son Joshua to Glenorky, a lake resort in British Columbia. The lake is said to be home to a mysterious water monster, Orky. Ashley sees some odd things which convince her the monster is real, and playful rather than dangerous. Jack is too busy with work, Joshua with such manly pursuits as driving and rock-climbing to pay much attention to Ashley. Lonely and bored, she tries to make friends with Orky, feeding it Oreos. When she climbs into danger, Orky fetches her father to rescue her.

Deeply affected by the experience, although he thinks it was a dream, Jack alternates between happiness and severe anxiety. Although he plays with his children and becomes closer to them, they are worried about him. Dr Wanda Bell diagnoses him as suffering from the same psychosis as a number of her patients. In fact, as an old Indian tells Ashley and Joshua, Orky is trying to communicate that the lake is being poisoned by the illegal dumping of toxic waste.

The men responsible for the dumping are worried by the presence of a Japanese mini-sub team searching for Orky. They build a mechanical monster so they can claim the story was a mere hoax to attract tourists. The scheme goes wrong, and Ashley, Joshua and a Japanese boy are trapped inside the fake Orky as it sinks.
