Johnny Smith is a mnemonic courier - an agent who transports data in an implant in his brain. To afford to retire, he agrees to one last run from Beijing to Newark, overloading his 180 gigabyte capacity with 320. He does not know what the data is, but realizes its importance when Yakuza Crime Syndicate assassins burst in and kill the Pharmakom defectors who have just uploaded it into his head. The download code does not get fully faxed to Newark, so although he escapes, he now faces neural failure within hours, then death, unless he can find a way to download.

One of the hit men, Shinji, delivers the salvaged part of the code to Takahashi, a businessman whose daughter has recently died from Nerve Attenuation Syndrome. NAS is a fatal epidemic for which Pharmakom sells treatment but not a cure. Pharmakom's deceased founder/CEO Anna Kalman "haunts" Takahashi: Her neural net personna flickers onto screens and talks to him wherever he goes. She warns him not to trust Shinji. He ignores her tip that the data Johnny carries is valuable, and targets Johnny with a pseudo-religious bionic hit man called Street Preacher.

Johnny's own agent, Ralfi, helps Shinji capture him, with the intent of severing and cryogencially preserving his head. But Jane, a mercenary bodyguard, saves, befriends, and accompanies him. She has friends in the LoTechs, resistance movement opposing the ruling high-tech corporations.

Recurrent head pain reminds Johnny that time is running out. Jane takes him to Spider, an anti-establishment "flesh mechanic" she hopes can remove the implant. Spider tells them that the implant contains the cure for NAS, and urges Johnny to sacrifice some motor skills for a crude removal. But Street Preacher arrives and kills Spider. Johnny and Jane escape. J-Bone of the LoTechs leads them to "Jones," a navy decryption expert who happens to be a dolphin. As Jones works on breaking the download code, Takahashi, Shinji, and Street Preacher arrive to threaten Johnny with a sword, a retractable laser-wire thumb implant, fights, fires, falls, and guns. Even if the decryption and download can succeed, can he survive?
