Review Summary
The Great Divorce is the story of a man's dream-journey from Hell to Heaven. He finds himself in the Grey Town or Hell and takes a bus along with some quarrelsome people to the outskirts of heaven. Here the people from Hell seem like ghosts compared to the true reality of Heaven. Some Solids (saved or redeemed people) meet the ghosts and try to convince them of the Truth, though all but one choose to return rather than give up something that holds them back from eternal bliss. This is an interesting and amazing analysis of Free Will, the nature of Human Choice, and how sin keeps people from joy.

This man's journy starts when he boards a bus going to heaven. Throughout the book the narroator wonders through a smi-sate of Heaven. He is visited by a spiritual being who helps the narrorator to come to terms with where he his, how he got here, and his personal salvation.
Jessie Hamilton, Resident Scholar

The main character falls into a deep sleep and dreams. In his dream he finds himself on the outskirts of hell. Not an entirely traditional hell, but one where the suffering may be escaped.

The bus to heaven arrives to take some of the fortunate damned to the outer fringes of heaven. Once there the loved ones who have 'gone before' try to persuade the hell-bound to come into heaven, and ultimate joy. The results are very strange: in some ways tragic, in others utterly joyful. But of course it IS all a dream - isn't it?
