Review Summaries
"Xylara “Lara” is the daughter of the King of Xy but, she is not content to just learn to embroidery and keep house. She tricks her father into letting her learn how to heal. She takes so well to it she becomes a master healer. Later after her father has passed on and her brother is King she defies him and goes to the tent of the prisoners that were caught in an ongoing war with the “Firelanders”, and treats them. She feels that she must do this not only due to her oath as a healer but to show that her race is honorable.
It becomes clear that the Firelanders are going to win this war and take possession of the Xy castle. To keep from loosing everything the King meets with the Firelander Warlord and negotiates a peaceful end to the hostilities. One thing that is part of the negotiations is that the Warlord is to take a “Warprize” as is the custom of his people. He clearly details what this will mean to the King and then declares Lara as his Warprize. She is chosen for many reasons, which are revealed throughout the book, and because she has been kind and treated the prisoners.
As the Warprize travels and lives with the Warlord she is thrown into a new and different culture and belief structure. But, while she feels she has been given into slavery she refuses to give up her healing crafts and care for others.
Lara finds herself caring more and more for the Warlord. She thinks about him when he is not around and finds that he listens to her and takes what she says into consideration and values her healing skills. She also finds herself physically attracted to him. She has to deal with inner feelings and also to discover just what injustice has really been done to her before she will be able to act on those feeling.
