Review Summary
Hundreds of years have passed since the Tyrant was ruling in the galazy, but his influence is still felt. The Bene Gesserit have gained an important ally though: the Duncan Idaho ghola. But the Sisterhood has made a slight miscalculation in their faith in the ghola. Before their miscalculation comes to fruition, several important characters come into play. First, is Odrade a Bene Gesserit who plays the role of trying to be the ghola's friend and teaching him important principles: Bene Gesserit ones. Another important character is Miles Teg, an older military genius who is training Duncan. The final important character is Sheeana a girl from Rakis who can control the worms.

Because of Sheeana's ability, she has been taken by the priests of the Tyrant as a trophy child and means of communication with him. Odrade though is given the commision of taming the girl and training her in the Bene Gesserit ways, although many believe she is already too old. Meanwhile, the Sisterhood has to deal with a new group of women who rival the Bene Gesserit and our coming out of the Scattering. These women possess a powerful tool: euphoric sex to ensnare men. Because of the political factions in the Sisterhood, the compound where Duncan is being held gets attacked and Lucilla, his new "mother," and Miles Teg have to escape.

Once Duncan and his group arrive at an old Harkonnen no-globe, Miles has to awaken the ghola prematurly, and he uses the new technique of beating the ghola to get the real Duncan to awaken. But the Tleilaxu planted a special trigger in this ghola.

As the Honored Matres begin their attack, Duncan's power is let loose: he knows how to counter the sexual bond that the Honored Matre uses on him and bonds her to himself also. Meanwhile, Odrade has been struggling with the child's learning and the priest's cooperation. The tension of the whole novel climaxs, when the Honored Matres arrive on the planet Rakis. In order to save the ghola, Sheeana, Odrade, and some worms, Miles Teg and his fearless men stay on the planet to fight the Honored Matres and die in the ensuing battle. Unnoticed, Odrade takes somthing that ends up changing the course of the future unkowingly into the next novel.
