Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch has enough headaches about the looming conflict when an important dwarf turns up dead with all evidence pointing at the trolls. The apparent assassination is threatening to spark an all-out war between the dwarves and the trolls in the very streets of Ankh-Morpork!
Besides the threat of war, Vimes has paperwork piling up like mountains waiting for him while the Patrician, Lord Vetinari, makes certain political decisions Vimes is NOT happy about. Namely, having a VAMPIRE assigned to the Watch and a government inspector breathing down Vimes' neck and watching every single move he makes.
