Evil scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (Beaulieu) has devised the ultimate torture devise; a spaceship whose occupants are forced to watch terrible B-movies from the 50's and 60's. Michael Nelson (played by himself) is the astronaut who is burdened with watching the tedious films. Along with his robotic pals Crow T. Robot (Beaulieu) and Tom Servo, (Murphy) Mike gamely views the motion picture while providing a running commentary of snide, silly, often hilarious quips. Their cinematic asides are better the actual screenplay and dialogue of the movie. The movie they are enduring this time is This Island Earth starring Jeff Morrow, Rex Reason, Faith Domergue, Russell Johnson, and Lance Fuller. It is an outlandish 1950's science fiction movie about a race of super advanced aliens called Metalunians lead by the tanned and cerebral Exeter (Morrow) who sequester and commission the world's most brilliant scientific minds to solve a serious energy problem they are facing.
Dr. Meacham (Reason), Dr. Adams (Domergue), and Dr. Carlson (Johnson) realize they are being brainwashed and attempt to flee. Carlson is killed and the other two are brought aboard the alien spacecraft, then “conditioned” to make the voyage across the universe to Metaluna. After learning the alien world is being destroyed and their intended strategy is to conquer the Earth, Adams and Meacham manage to leave the planet before its annihilation. A large mutant sentry has stowed aboard and threatens Dr. Adams when she emerges from her conditioning session. The movie and the spoofing involving Nelson and his mechanical sidekicks makes for a funny and nostalgic look at the one-time innocence of Hollywood and its audience.
