| Review Summary |
The fourth book based on the television series Stargate SG-1, set near the end of Season 5, it follows events that took place in Season 3, ‘Crystal Skull', where Daniel Jackson's grandfather used a crystal skull to travel to a Mayan pyramid on the planet P7X-377, home of the giant alien, Quetzalcoatl.
While Col. O'Neill and Maj. Carter travel off world to rescue stranded geologists, they themselves become stranded when the Stargate is flooded. Meanwhile, a warning from Nicholas Ballard sends Daniel Jackson and Teal'c to Mexico to stop an archeologist from using a newly discovered crystal skull.
Failing to reach him in time, Daniel and Teal'c go to P7X-377 in the hope that's where the archaeologist has been sent. Instead, they learn that the crystal skull is a transport network built by the ancient race. The network worlds include the planet that O'Neill and Carter – and the archaeologist – are now on, Xalotcan. The presence of the Stargate on this world means the Goa'uld are present. Daniel and Teal'c travel there to rescue O'Neill, Carter and the archaeologist.
Meanwhile on Xalotcan, O'Neill and Carter encounter a group of children who are about to be sacrificed to an Aztec god. When Daniel and Teal'c arrive, the team discovers that not only is there an Aztec culture on a world in the throws of self-destruction, they must deal with the Goa'uld posing as Aztec gods.
