"Code 46 is an atmospheric love drama with a futuristic setting where cities are heavily controlled by a totalitarian gorvernment. People can only travel if they have these special permits known as papelles. Tim Robbins stars as goverment investigator William who is sent to Shanghai to solve a case of fake papelles. While there he meets Maria (Samantha Morton) with whom he falls in love with even though he knows she is behind the forgered papelles. They have a wild, passionate affair. Thinking that the case is solved he goes back home to his wife and son in Seattle. At work the next day he finds that the case has been reopened because a friend of Maria's had bleed to death. His boss sends him back to Shanghai where he finds Maria has been sent to an institution for a code 46 violation. Her memory of their relationship was erased as well her pregnancy terminated. Once William get Maria released to his custody he gets a sample of her DNA and finds that she is a 100% match for his mother's DNA and a 50% match to him. This means they can never be lovers and have children. But in the end William desires Maria so much he risks everything for the forbidden love."
