| Review Summary |
Federal agent Alice Cable (Barbeau) is sent to the Louisiana swamps to help guard a secret government project run by Dr. Alec Holland (Wise), who hopes to cross the genes of humans and plants. Commandos in the employ of his rival, Dr. Anton Arcane (Jourdan) attack the compound, and in the confusion and fire, Holland is transformed into Swamp Thing (Durock) -- half-man, half-plant -- with tremendous strength and remarkable regenerative powers. Alice has rescued his final notebook from the battle, so Arcane's thugs come after her, with Swamp Thing helping to protect the fast-thinking, two-fisted heroine until both are captured and placed in a dungeon in Arcane's mansion. At last the villain has the formula, and he intends to use it to take over the world. Veteran horror director Wes Craven wrote and shot this 1982 film early in his career, and though it reaches for the tenderness and pathos of the 1970s DC Comic that inspired it, the film is weak and uneven.
