The island of Sodor is linked to the town of Shining Time by a lost railway. No one is certain how to find it the railway and the key to the mystery is an engine named Lady which disappeared many years ago. A recluse named, Burnette Stone (Fonda), is rehabilitating a mysterious train engine in secret for years but has not been able to restore it to working order. A Native American train conductor named Billy Twofeathers (Means) drives the steam engine into Shining Time when his young friend named Patch (McMains) tells him he has discovered the secret cave in Muffle Mountain where the engine is kept. Mr. Conductor (Baldwin) is an elf-sized individual who is trying to bridge the two worlds to safeguard Lady from the sinister Diesel 10, an ancient engine out to do harm to the steam engines of Sodor, along with his two nasty companions Dodge and Splatter.
Mr. Conductor has run out of gold dust and summons C. (Conductor) Junior (Rodgers) his nephew to help him. Lilly (Wilson), who is Stone's granddaughter, gets off the train at Shining Time station and meets Stacy Jones (Conn). Thomas the Tank Engine tells Percy that Diesel 10 has reappeared by way of a secret railway, however the diesel has overheard the conversation says Toby. Thomas searches for the telltale buffers, signaling the secret railway entrance. Patch meets Lilly and they ride a horse up Muffle Mountain to find the cave housing Lady. Lady is running again as both she and Thomas must flee from Diesel 10. Mr. Conductor and Junior rediscover gold dust and the engines are saved.
The Magic Railroad is a great film for children who are fans of the Thomas and Friends railway stories, movies and toys. While harmless fun, it is practically indecipherable to adults who are looking for plot and a story that connects from one scene to the next. It does offer great scenery and some special effects that are child friendly.
