Review Summary
On its maiden voyage, an atomic submarine gets tracked and buffeted by a mysterious object or creature that leaves a piece of itself lodged against the sub. Professors Carter (Curtis) and Joyce (Domergue), marine biologists, take two weeks to determine the remnant is the flesh of a giant mollusc, which in the meantime attacks various ships in the north Pacific. When it attacks humans on the coast near Astoria, Oregon, sub commander Pete Mathews (Tobey) and the scientists team up with the military to track it down. A giant octopus, radioactive from nuclear testing and extra hungry because most of its prey avoid its radioactivity, eventually pulls down a section of the Golden Gate bridge and attacks the Embarcadero, and the trio of humans (an uneasy but friendly love triangle) have to find a way to stop it. This 1955 thriller was Ray Harryhausen's next project after "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms": it basically duplicates the plot with slightly better stop-action footage, especially the scenes set in downtown San Francisco.
