Review Summaries
"The late Baron von Frankenstein's eldest son Wolf (Rathbone) returns from America to the castle and village bearing his name with his wife (Hutchinson) and son. They are greeted with little warmth or enthusiasm save for the servants. Wolf Frankenstein is met by Inspector Krogh (Atwill), who says numerous brutal murders have recently occurred with a pattern similar to those committed previously by the monster. Krogh is jaded about the creature because he lost his arm as a boy to it. Frankenstein searches the ruins of the former laboratory and is introduced, by the near fatal dropping of a rock on his head, to Ygor (Lugosi) and his family crypt. Ygor has a broken neck from a failed hanging many years ago for the crime of grave robbing. The monster (Karloff) lays quietly on his back seemingly asleep, but is actually only lacking the energy to fully live again having been hit by lightning. Frankenstein believes the best way to restore honor to the family name is to bring the monster to life and does so. Several nasty killings occur and little Peter Frankenstein tells his parents he has seen a friendly giant. Frankenstein vows to correct the monster with a brain operation, but Ygor wants the monster to go on killing the people who had him hanged. Ygor tries to strangle the doctor. Krogh visits the castle just after Frankenstein has shot Ygor to death and the two play a game of darts. The monster runs amok upon finding Ygor dead, snatching little Peter back to the lab. The Inspector and doctor rush to the boys rescue. The monster pulls off the prosthetic arm of Krogh before Frankenstein pushes the creature into a burning pit, killing it once and for all(?). The Frankensteins leave the village and castle behind and return to America."
