Review Summaries
" Ballantine, Jul 2004, 23.95, 352 pp. ISBN: 0345449169 Two years ago, her “mundane” mom died leaving Gwynne Owens without any prospects. Septuagenarian Guardian Lord Breen married the teen so she can have protection until her destiny calls her. A few years later, the kind Breen dies leaving Anna alone, but at least she has widow status and enjoys her work as a librarian of Guardian lore. In 1745, Scottish Laird Duncan MacRae wants to end the conflict between his homeland and England for the betterment of both countries. However, he is sidetracked when he sees Anna for the first time and understands the reference to Helen of Troy; he knows in his gut that she is his love buddy. Anna rejects his advances although she is attracted to him as he has too much power as a weather mage. Still he pursues her, but civil war between the two countries is imminent and these two individuals will play critical roles amplified by their love for one another. This is an intriguing historical fantasy romance starring two wonderful protagonists. A host of fabulous secondary players adds depth to the plot or insight to the lead duet. Much of the story line focuses on Duncan's efforts to win the heart of his ladylove and to convince her that they belong together, but once the potential catastrophe surfaces, the fantasy elements take charge of the plot. This strong tale will please fans of both sub-genres. Harriet Klausner "
