Coneheads
Directed by Steve Barron 1993
Staring: Dan Aykroyd (Beldar Conehead / Donald R. DeCicco), Jane Curtin (Prymaat Conehead),
This movie is a take off on skits developed on the "Saturday Night Live" TV show and numerous actors associated with "Saturday Night Live" appear in the movie.
Beldar (Aykroyd) and his wife, Prymaat (Curtin), are aliens from the planet Remulak who have been sent to Earth in advance of a planned invasion of Earth by forces from Remulak. However, while on their final approach to landing they encounter problems and end up crash landing and find themselves stranded. With some difficulty, they manage to contact Remulak and are told that rescue will be impossible for many years. With their mission having been aborted and rescue a long way off, they are forced to make their way alone on Earth.
Being a superior race, they are fluent in English other languages but speak in a halting, computer like manner, and know the literal but not colloquial meaning of words. Beldar quickly finds employment but is unable to provide a Social Security number to his employer, a small businessman who, wanting to keep the hardworking Beldar, pays an acquaintance for a fake Social Security number in the name of Donald R. DeCicco. The real DeCicco is deceased, but the supplier has provided the name and number to numerous other illegal immigrants, and the fake identity is soon spotted by an immigration official who is fanatic in his quest to halt illegal immigration. A series on comical adventures follows as Beldar, his wife and child (born after they arrive on Earth) manage to survive and prosper in suburban New Jersey always staying one step ahead of the INS.
Despite their bald, cone shaped heads, multiple rows of pointed teeth, strange speech and other odd characteristics, no one considers them to be out of place except the INS officer who identifies them as non-American aliens form France rather non-human aliens from space.
Aykroyd and Curtin deliver excellent performances and the rest of the big name cast delivers equally impressive performances in their roles. This is an excellent movie for those, like me, who enjoy an occasional off-beat comedy.
The movie is available on both video and DVD.
