"The early life of protagonist Raistlin Majere is outlined in the novel to show his coming of age and his development into a great mage. The novel is set during Raistlin's youth and shows his familial life in disarray after the death of his mother. There is a continual rivalry between him and his brother though his brother is abscent in knowledging this rivalry. Raistlin leaves behind youth to become a great mage and in the process becomes a man. He defeats his worst enemy, himself. "
