| Review Summary |
Frank Riley (Cronyn) is the elderly owner of Riley's cafe, a business on the ground floor of an old tenement. A developer has cleared several blocks in the entire neighborhood to prepare for a huge group of skyscrapers, but Riley and his somewhat senile wife Faye (Tandy) won't vacate. Neither will several of their neighbors: Harry (McRae), a former boxer who watches TV all day; Mason (Boutsikaris) a young failed painter; and Marisa (Pena) a pregnant Hispanic woman. The developer's henchman has hired a local gang headed by Carlos (Michael Carmine) to terrorize the tenants into moving out, but one day two tiny spaceships show up to even the odds. They're not only friendly, sly, and powerful, but they reproduce! This unlikely and somewhat cloying 1987 fairy tale-comedy has its moments; mostly, it's great to see old pros Cronyn and Tandy do their grouchy and light-headed shtick, respectively.
