Tess Soerensen hops a ride on a Chapalii freighter, back to her ex-insurgent brother, Charles. She discovers that the Chapalii are up to no good, so she follows them to Rhui, a semi-settled planet where humans have been transplanted, millenia ago, possibly by the Chapalli. There she is taken in and earns a place with the nomadic jaran.
