Review Summaries
"Munchausen is the European version of the American tall tale: the teller and hero of his own outrageous and fanciful lies. A 17th century aristocrat, the Baron, his talented henchmen (especially a super-speedy runner named Berthold played by Idle), and a 10-year-old girl named Sally Salt try to save a town from defeat by the Turks in war. They get swallowed by a sea monster, take a balloon made of women's undergarments on a trip to the moon where the King of the Moon (Williams) has a split-personality fight between his head and body, meet Vulcan (Reed) and dance with Venus (Thurman), and manage to escape the Grim Reaper. Although visually captivating, this $40 million film was a colossal flop, nearly ruining writer-director Terry Gilliam, and did not make back even half its cost. It's a bit long and doesn't hang together well, but it has its moments."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
