Review Summaries
"Taking place in three seperate time periods spanning several centuries, Icehenge is a story about history written by the victors, and an archaeological mystery stretching from the dust covered ruins of a domed Martian city to an impossible artifact on the polar plain of Pluto. Emma Weil is a bystander on a mutinous freighter hijacked during the failed Martian revolution. Her journal, discovered amidst ruins three hundred years later, becomes the obsession of Dr. Hjalmar Nederland, a Martian archaeologist. Nederland believes that Emma's account challenges the official history of the revolt. When a gigantic and very old ice structure is discovered on the first human expedition to Pluto, more questions are raised regarding what really happened all those years ago. Edmund Doya, the last narrator, is Nederland's grandson. He joins an expedition to Pluto to prove Icehenge is a fake."
Trint Williams, Resident Kim Stanley Robinson Scholar

"ICEHENGE is a novel published in 1984. Who has erected these giant ice monuments near Pluto's north pole? While Nederland, the archaelogist, is persuaded that it's a sign left by the ship of Davydov who left Mars, 200 years ago, in order to flee from Earth's hegemony over the solar system, the historian Edmond Doya believes that the monument is part of a very smart mystification invented by Caroline Holmes, a wealthy businesswoman living on a small asteroid around Saturn. But Caroline herself is now financing an expedition on Pluto in order to find the truth about Icehenge."
Daniel Staebler, Resident Kim Stanley Robinson Scholar
