"A modern artist paints her visions of a fantasy world to keep them from overwhelming her, not realizing she is suffering from the effects of an evil mage's efforts to use her spirit to bridge their two worlds. When her spirit is sucked through to the fantasy world, she meets the prince she'd fallen in love with 10 years ago on her first visit to this world, and discovers he's become an assassin bent on revenge for her part in destroying his kingdom. A mage shows up and explains that the artist's arrival has touched off yet another magical disaster that they have one month to fix. For their own reasons, the three of them, plus the minstrel at the tavern where they meet, join forces to attempt to fix the problem. They travel through the countryside, the artist learning about her nascent magical powers and working with the mage to harness them, and also learning more about what really happened ten years ago. Threatened by their potential for success, the evil mage takes action to stop them, escalating the battle, and resulting in the death of one of the party. The remaining party members must put aside all past differences and join forces to defeat the evil mage and stop the magical disaster, each being called upon to sacrifice the one thing he or she cares for most.
