Review Summaries
"The second Godzilla feature was rushed to theaters in Japan only 6 months after the debut hit. (It's not clear whether Warner Brothers did not believe it could use the name "Godzilla" for the 1959 US version, or simply wished to avoid paying for the rights, so the monster was initially known as "Gigantis.") A crude ankylosaur called "Angilas" turns up to battle Gojira on Iwato Island and then ravage Osaka. (Angilas' armored body seems to have a chicken head attached to the front of it.) Dr. Yamane (Shimura) returns from the first film to explain that these are both "fire monsters" from prehistoric times (and he screens a minute of film clips from "Godzilla" to bring everyone up to speed), but his dubbed dialogue has a German accent! Gojira defeats Angilas with his atomic breath and disappears into the ocean, only to turn up off Hokkaido some months later. Most of the story centers on two airmen, the admirable but doubt-ridden Tsukioka (Koizumi) and his goofy friend Kobayashi (Chiaki -- the jolly member of "Seven Samurai"), and their efforts to find a way to defeat the monster. Tsukioka was dubbed by George Takei and Kobayashi by Daws Butler (the voice of Yogi Bear, among others), so along with the hilarious English dialogue and many plot holes, it's a hoot to hear Mr. Sulu interact with Yogi Bear in the U.S. version of this film."
