Review Summary
FORTRESS is a movie directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) in 1993.

John Brennick and his wife Karen are arrested while crossing the U.S. frontier. The government allows only one child per family and Karen is pregnant for the second time. They are locked in an underground prison called the Fortress, lost in the middle of the desert.

All the prisoners are implanted with a chip that causes pain in case of violation of the prison regulations. If a prisoner dares to cross the red lines which mark out in squares the prison, the microchip will explode in his entrails. Furthermore, the main computer named Zed observes the slightest movements or dreams of the prisoners and reports them to the director Poe who decides which punishment to inflict to the culprit.

Brennick, in the company of his cell companions, will nevertheless find a way to take the dangerous chip out of his body and escape. But the way to the exit door is long and filled with danger.

In a fascist United States, a former soldier and his wife are arrested for having a second baby (illegal due to overpopulation) when their first is stillborn. They are put in the Fortress, a maximum security prison run by a computer and a mysterious warden. He manages to survive amid the endlessly brutal captors and other prisoners, then hatches a complicated plot with his fellow prisoners to free his wife and escape.
