(click here) TV-Commentary - Battlestar Galactica Was Battlestar Galactica politically conservative? Unlike most science fiction, which is politically left-of-center, Battlestar Galactica seemed to be more right-wing. The whole premise of the series is that naive peacenicks force the fleet to lower its guard and get destroyed by its enemies. This is a clear statement about the need for viligence and a strong defense, and a statement against relying on treaties with enemies. The series was made in the 1970's; could this be anything other than the Soviet Union they were talking about? The series also took a dim view of civilian rule. The council of the 12 was always viewed as gullible and too pro-peace, such as the time when they allowed themselves to be captured by the Eastern Alliance (Russia again?) prisoners, while Commander Adama was always the tough realist. But was the series trying to say that an enlightened military government (Commander Adama?) was best? BSG was about survival - how a group would survive a cataclysm, the unpleasant and sometimes unfair choices they would have to make, the ruthlessness they would have to adopt to do so. And if Commander Cain ran on the Republican ticket for President, he'd be even more conservative than Ronald Reagan.
