| What do you like about this show? "I must say that I agree with what Martin Landau once said about Space:1999 Year 1:It had a style of its own, a feel of its own, a rythm of its own. Indeed, its concept was unique. Seeing Space:1999 now, and after reading John Muir's wonderful "Exploring Space:1999", I even more admire the scientific dispassion feeling of the show. The writers obviously wanted intentionally to distinguish themselves from other sci-fi shows where science and technology was producing a heavenly tomorrow. Space:1999 claimed that this is impossible becuase of man's darkest quality, like arrogance, ambition, vanity, that were so well dramatised in the roles of deluded scientists at various episodes(e.g. The Infernal Machine-what a current theme aint it?) I really liked what Space:1999 tried to show, the "downfall of 20th-century technological man" as a critic said. I liked that it seriously tried to warn us about the dangerous potentials of technology, through its surreal(sometimes) approach. Ok, Space:1999 had its shortcomings, as all sci-fi shows, what show hasn't any? You point them out. But it's overall thesis and philosophy, that man is on his own, afraid and vurnerable when in outer space, yet his humanity is his hope, still works more than just fine for me.
