Review Summary
In 1921, a British field expedition unearths the 3700-year-old mummy of Im-Ho-Tep, an Egyptian noble who was buried alive for sacrilege. Also discovered is the Scroll of Thoth, which supposedly contains the incantation for returning the dead to life. A careless researcher deciphers and reads it, which awakens the mummy and drives the poor scientist insane. Ten years later, Im-Ho-Tep, disguised as a modern Egyptian, leads another field expedition to the burial site of his beloved, Anksunamen, with the hope of reviving her forever. It's not clear whether his ancient beloved is reincarnated in the young Helen Grosvener or Im-Ho-Tep sends the spirit of the ancient princess into the modern-day flapper, but in either case she's in danger. This obsessive tale is decently made for its time. There's plenty of creaky acting and dialogue, but not as much delightful camp as the Frankenstein movies, and Karloff brings a certain majestic dignity to his role.
