This is a very interesting book; in fact, it's really two books in one. In the first half, Colin Campbell and his new wife Gwen have to flee unknown assailants who are trying to kill them for equally unknown reasons. We see what life is like in a space station orbiting the moon; as the duo flees to the moon, we see what life is like on pioneer settlements on the moon, from remote outpost like Lucky Dragon to progressively larger settlements and cities up to Luna City itself. There's a lot of action and adventure in the story as Colin and Gwen crash land on the moon, have a shootout with villains while riding a "space bus" along the surface of the moon, and have other assorted adventures. And then we come to the second half of the book; Gwen opens a portal in space/time, which leads Colin to the growing Lazarus Long polygameous family. Colin is immediately initiated into the orgy/family, having sex with a number of men and women. The story begins to get preposterous as we are told that Colin has been recruited for a mission to rescue an antiquated computer on the moon. They (Colin and the Long family) yap endlessly about it, in between arguments about who should sleep with whom, before deciding to rescue the antiquated computer, for reasons that still aren't very clear. The story, while not bad, loses credibility as more and more unlikely things happen. It had more interest, and realism, in the first half, when they couldn't simply jump back and forth between a dozen universes before lunch. Still, it's a great read, if only for the first half. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
