Review Summaries
"In this sequel to the Creature From the Black Lagoon, scientists return to the Amazon and capture the Creature. They return with him to Florida, where he is displayed in a marine park, with a plan to study him. The Creature, enraged, fights to get loose. Romance develops between the two research scientists. The Creature, seeing the beautiful female researcher, also decides he wants her. Conflict develops between the man and the woman over the motives for keeping the Creature in captivity, as well as whether she can succesfully have a demanding career and a sustain a traditional 50s love relationship. In a wild attempt at freedom, the Creature kills one of his captors and escapes back to the ocean. A broad reference is drawn between the repression of 50s society and the three main characters: The Creature, entirely wild and with an obvious lack of concern for society's sexual constaints, must be contained. The human race must be protected from the sort of miscegnation that would result if he were allowed to breed. (A parallel with mounting tensions over racial segregation at that time.) The lead female must "choose", she cannot be wife and scientist; she cannot raise a family, please her husband, and maintain her career. The lead male almost loses this woman, who he reluctantly admits he has come to love, through his casual acceptance of the mores of the time. They have already decided they must eventually part, and it is only when she has been captured by the Creature that he will fight to have her back. To return to the plot, the two scientists attempt to pursue and recapture the Creature. The Creature seizes the female and takes her off to his lair. Our hero, and what seems like the police and the Army, find them, kill the Creature, and rescue the girl. The 'Revenge' in the title, I assume, would refer to the Creature's seizing the girl who romantically belongs to the man who captured him; however, this is an obvious 50s attempt at misdirection. The Creature has wanted a human female since he first saw one one movie previously. In carrying off this particular female, the revenge aspect was just a nice little plus for him. "
