Alvin Maker, a young boy with supernatural powers of creation, is sent away from his family to begin his apprenticeship as a blacksmith. His master cheats him, and his enemy the Unmaker secretly encourages people to try to destroy Alvin. Alvin meets Arthur Stewart, a young half-black runaway boy who was conceived when his mother was raped by her master. When the master sends bounty-hunters after Arthur, Alvin and his friends try to protect him, with mixed results.
