Still disguised as a boy and pursuing her dream to become a knight, Alanna is now Prince Jonathan's squire. At the very beginning of the book it becomes apparent that she safeguarded by the Goddess Mother. She acquires several interesting things, like a magical talisman which shows her whether magic is present and a magical cat, to whom she can telepathically talk to.
War breaks out against a neighboring country, Tusaine, which is short-lived but glorious nevertheless. Alanna also experiences her first kiss and her first love, however not with the same man. George, her friend the thief, starts wooing her but it is Prince Jonathan who conquers her heart. With these things on her mind as well as The Ordeal for Knighthood, Alanna also has to deal with Duke Roger of Conte, her greatest enemy ever, who is proving to be as guilty as she has always suspected him to be. Shortly after being knighted, Alanna is finally able to face with him in a clash of swords, before she sets out into the world to seek adventure.

Alanna is now Prince Jon's squire. She is becoming one of the best squires in the palace, and is expected to be a wonderful knight. She goes and fights in her first war with Jon at her side, and discovers an evil plot to kill the royal family.
Alanna is also faced with female teenage problems. She wants to learn more about being a girl and doing girly kinds of things. She and Jon are interested in each other, but George also has his eye on her.
