Review Summaries
"Eskarina is the eighth son of an eighth son -- oops, make that daughter -- and a dying wizard named Drum Billet travels to her mountain village to pass on his powers to her at her birth ... by mistake. Local midwife and witch Granny Weatherwax tries to destroy the magic staff that comes with the job and otherwise keep Esk from her destiny (after all, everyone knows only men can be wizards, and Unseen University would never admit a girl!), but eventually yields to the inevitable and assists the bright and feisty girl on her way. Enroute to UU and the great city of Ankh-Morpork, Esk meets Simon, a gifted young magician in the making whom (it becomes evident) dark forces are planning to use as their bridge to Discworld. A showdown is in the offing for our heroine -- not only with incredible powers of evil but with the cranky bearded professors and clueless students of UU who want to keep her out."
David Loftus, Resident Terry Pratchett Scholar

"A dying wizard passed his power to an heir. Trouble is, Eskarina Smith is more of an heiress... Now after a few years of tutelage by Granny Weatherwax, Discworld's first female wizard is ready to demand equal rites!"
Beth Winter, Resident Terry Pratchett Scholar

"A dying wizard makes a mistake and passes his powers to a girl. She's raised by the local witch (Granny Weatherwax' premiere) but eventually decides to go to the chauvanistic Unseen University to learn how to use her powers. Unfortunately, it's not just the wizards who are interested in them ..."
Confusing Manifestation, Resident Terry Pratchett Scholar
