The explorers Erx and Berx are nearing an isolated planet on the fringe of known space when their ship starts to act crazy and looks set to detonate. They say their final good-byes to each other, but before anything catastrophic happens, a man flying a spaceship of unknown design rescues them. The duo meet Hawkk Hunter, an individual who has no idea who he is, how he landed on the deserted planet, or how created one of the fastest spaceships in the year 7200.

Erx and Berx persuade Hunter to enter the Earth Race, an annual spectacular that awards the winning team with incredible wealth. Hawk agrees because recognition will enable him to learn identity. He easily wins the race and obtains a clue towards finding out his identity.

This is the first book in a new series by the author of the Wingman and the Chopper Ops novels and it appears to be a sure hit for action adventure readers. The endearing hero marches at his own pace yet remains a team player. Hunter's interactions with Erx, Berx, and others come across as genuine and the choices he makes fit his personality. In STAR HAWK, Mac Mahoney has created a champion of justice that will prove to have wide appeal.
