| Review Summary |
A human boy, Bastian, explores Fantasia through a book about young warrior Atriau's quest to save the land from the Nothing, a force of negative energy which washes over the fantasia. Fantasia is the vast, beautiful world inside people's minds; it is being destroyed because humans are losing their hope. An evil wolf-like creature, the morque, is attempting to help the Nothing, and with the luck dragon, Falcore's help, Atriau discovers how to save Fantasia through Bastian.

Shy, lonely Bastian comes upon an old book entitled "The Neverending Story". He starts to read it, and finds himself in the land of Fantasia, which is slowly being destroyed by the Nothing. The Childlike Empress of Fantasia, who is deathly ill, sends a young warrior, Atreyu, on a quest to save Fantasia. As Bastian reads about Atreyu's adventures, he becomes a part of the story, and learns that only he has the power to save Fantasia from destruction.

Insecure, dreamy Bastian steals a magic book called "The Neverending Story" in Coreanders book shop and then reads it in his school's attic instead of going to class. As he reads the story of the Nothing taking over the magical realm of Fantasia, and the child warrior Atreyo's search for a cure for the Childlike Empress, ruler of the realm, he realizes he too is a part of the story, and only he has the power to save the empress and her magical world.
