Review Summaries
"In the near future, as the world's resource shortages threaten all of life, scientists have found a way to observe the past. As researchers study the history of slavery, they begin to focus on the one pivotal person that transformed the world: Columbus. His motivations, history and personality are revealed by Pastwatch, the organization that studies the past. As the observation of Columbus progresses, scientists identifies surprising motivations for his quest to sail to Asia and an opportunity to change the past, possibly stopping the imminent destruction of life on earth. "
lloyd thayne, Resident Orson Scott Card Scholar

"A very interesting paradox faces the world in the future as resources are dwindling and near extinction of the human race looms ahead. A somewhat obscure collection of researchers using a device that allows them to view the past discovers that the state of the current world hinges upon Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the new world. Turning him from this quest may change the future for the better and erase the horror of slavery and many other abuses inflicted by man upon himself. The paradox comes full circle when it dawns upon them that they will be erased from existence in this new and better world should they succeed in recreating their past. Orson Scott Card builds many fascinating twists into the plot and the characters are fully developed with all the complexity needed to carry this story through time."
Ender, Resident Orson Scott Card Scholar
