"Case was the one of the best net cowboys, capable of leaving his body and entering the vast data fields of cyberspace, penetrate corporate secrets, and sell to competitors willing to pay his price. Then he made a mistake. He got greedy and stole from one of his employers. They injected him with a mycotoxin that destroyed his talent, confined him to the prison of his flesh.
Case travelled to Chiba City in search of a cure, but as time went by and a cure proved impossible he started embracing dangerous street hustles. Then he's approached by a enigmatic stranger named Armitage. He makes Case an offer: an operation to restore his ability to enter cyberspace in exchange for a job.
Case accepts, undergoes surgery, and reappears in New York, where he puts his skills to the test. But questions gnaw at his mind. Who is Armitage working for? With the aid of Molly, a bodyguard wired for speed, Case attempts to discover and understand the Articial Intelligence that has been manipulating the entire operation before it can escape into the void.
