Review Summary
Young Vanya Smetzki first found out about his Jewish identity when he was a young boy in Russia. When his parents decide to move the family to America after the fall of comunism, he and his family stay with some family in Ukraine. While adventuring in the woods one day as a young boy, Ivan stumbles upon a chasm and what looks like a young woman lying asleem on the forest floor. As leaves rustle, afraid, Ivan uses his tracking talent to scurry home to safety.

Now he is an American scholar who travels back to his homeland to continue his studies. while visiting his relatives in Ukraine again, he once again stumbles across the same chasm. This time he is determined to figure out the mysteries of this chasm deep in the forest...

Enchantment is a delightful version of Sleeping Beauty. Ivan sees a woman on a pedestal with a leafy-moat guarded by a bear. he chases the bear, breaks the spell, and kisses the princess. Now he has to help the princess save her people from the witch Baba Yaga. They eventually fall in love and fight off the evil witch.

This is a delightful version of the sleeping beauty story. At age 10 Ivan encounters a sleeping princess in the woods. He is terrifed of something in the forest, and runs away.
In his mid 20s, he goes back to the same forest, and enters into a fairy tale like setting chasing a bear breaking the spell and kissing the princess.
Ha! The story usually ends here with a happily ever after, but in the case of Enchantment, it just begins.
There is time travel, meeting and dealing with the various families on both sides of the time bridge, witches, a random bear, and other such goodies.

iris H elentuch, Resident Scholar

A 20-something Russian-Jew immigrant is compelled to go back to his homeland to see if the woman he saw on a pedestal with a leafy-moat guarded by a monster is still there. Instead of running away this time, he wakes her up and sets into motion a higher power's plans, to help the princess save her people from the witch Baba Yaga.
Lyra, Resident Scholar

Enchantment is an exciting and hilarous time travel version of Sleeping Beauty with Ivan, a Russian Jew, finding his true love and together they battle an evil witch and save her kingdom in a Russia of the past.
gardener, Resident Scholar

A remarkable re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty fable, using a modern young man to go back in time to save the princess. He tries to fit in her time, help save her people from a wicked witch, then they both come forward where she has to fit in and they're pursued by the witch. Some wonderful details of magic.
Andrea Jackson, Resident Scholar

Ivan finds a beautiful woman in the Carpathian mountains and awakens her with a kiss. He goes back to her time (9th century) and has to marry her because he saved her. They eventually fall in love and fight off the evil witch who is trying to take over her city.
Cherie Lynn, Resident Scholar
