Review Summaries
"Bruce Wayne is a good-hearted millionaire whose only friend is his butler, Alfred. Bruce is also the infamous superhero, Batman, who guards over the city of Gotham. One night, he encounters a new, but uncanny villain called the Joker. He's always smiling, has green hair, and plans to make everyone really happy. Now, Batman has to stop him, before he turns his gloomy hometown into a circus. The music, sets, and camera work are stunning. Jack Nicholson steals the show as the Joker, but Michael is also amazing. "
Estefan Ellison, Resident Scholar

"Adam West assumed the role of Batman and Bruce Wayne in the TV show. Val Kilmer and George Clooney have also played the Caped Crusader, but Michael Keaton really shines in this one. Jack Nicholson plays the leader of Batman's many villians, which include the Joker, the Penguin and the Riddler. The villians are funny, but with his many gadgets and the mighty Batmobile, Batman ends up as the greatest superhero who ever lived!"

"In a prologue, a young boy witnesses his parents' murder by an armed robber on the streets of Gotham. He resolves to devote his life to fighting crime. Some years later, a Dark Knight appears to defend the city against a crime wave. Jack Napier (Nicholson), an enforcer for crime boss Carl Grissom (Jack Palance) is horribly disfigured and largely bereft of his sanity by a firefight in a chemical factory, and becomes the Joker. He makes plans to defeat Batman while prize-winning photojournalist Vicki Vale (Basinger) seeks to uncover the mysterious crimefighter's secret identity. Visually, this 1989 film directed by Tim Burton is a thriller. Billy Dee Williams, Robert Wuhl, and Pat Hingle are among the supporting players, and veteran British actor Michael Gough does a memorable turn as butler Alfred Pennyworth."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar

"In this first installment of the modern Batman series, Tim Burton creates a dark world where a champion of justice is needed. Jack Nicholson does his usual great job portraying the Joker who is Batman's arch-nemesis. Michael Keaton takes a surprisingly good turn from his usual comedic roles and does Batman very well. This movie was co-written by Bob Kane, the original creator of Batman, and has been said to be closer to what he originally invisioned. Excellent movie."
Preston, Resident Batman Scholar
