Review Summary
Gordon, a doctor, is falsely convicted of killing a man and is sentenced to be hung. The day before he hangs he's visited by Joel, a mad scientist who gives him a drug called the black sleep that puts him in such a deep sleep that he appears dead.
The prison doctor proclaims Gordon dead and he's buried. He's dug up by Joel and Odo, a gypsy.
For saving his life, Joel expects Gordon to join him at his mansion and help him with his work.
Gordon learns that Joel has been using the black sleep to drug people in order to operate on their brains in hopes of learning how to cure his comatose wife's brain tumor.
However, the surgeries are damaging the people and disabling them, forcing Joel to keep them in a dungeon.
With the help of Patricia, a nurse, Gordon tries to help the people, but Joel stops them.
The people break free and while trying to escape they kill Joel and his wife.
