"The Warprize (Lara) and the Warlord (Keir) are traveling quickly back to the plains to have their union blessed and approved of by the Warlord's people. He is hoping to get there before some of his enemies are able to show up and possibly protest their union. While the Warlord had tried to leave the Warprize (Lara) behind she felt that her place was with him and started to follow him on foot. Once he gives in and lets Lara join the journey the story begins. She and her new apprentice are working daily to teach some basic herbal studies to the Firelanders and to show them how healing, and dealing with thing can help them to survive better.
Unfortunately as they are traveling they come upon a village that appears to be resisting the advances of their new Liege Lord Keir and he is furious. But, quickly Lara determines it might be something much more sinister than a protest. She figures it is most likely a form of the plague. Keir forbids Lara to approach the village and try to heal the sick. But, she sticks to her guns and forces him to let her try and do what she is trained to do. But, as soon as she enters the town she finds tragedy, and tragedy will also strike one of her party.
As the plague infects the camp Lara is terrified that she will cause the death of the one she loves and of others she has come to care for. She and her apprentice do all they can to stop the fast acting killer, and in many cases it is not enough. While the plague is at its worst Kier's second in command challenges him for the position of Warlord. Lara spends time while carrying for her friends determining that they mean more to her than she thought. Lara's future will also hinge on the outcome of the battle for command. "
