Review Summary
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays The Terminator, a human looking virtually unstoppable cyborg sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is also sent from the future to help Sarah survive and defuse the plan to change the future by going back into the past.
Bobby Blades, Resident Scholar

A technological Frankenstein's monster from 2029 A.D. (Arnold Schwarzenegger in his seminal role) is sent "back" to our present time by its inhuman creator to kill Sarah Connor, a normal, unassuming waitress. One lone warrior from that near-future, Kyle Reese, is sent by mankind to protect and defend Sarah from the Terminator because, as Reese explains to Sarah, "it's very important that you live." The succeeding 80-90 minutes unfold as an energetic yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt by Reese and Sarah to evade the Terminator over the 48-hour-period of May 12-14, 1984.
Hollis Evon Ramsey, Resident Scholar

We learn in a prologue that Skynet, a computer system built by humans, nearly destroyed the world in 1997. It fights a losing war with humans but manages to send a robot -- The Terminator -- back in time to 1984 with a mission to kill Sarah Connor, the young woman who eventually will give birth to the Leader of the human resistance. Kyle Reese, a human soldier and bounty hunter, follows the Terminator back to 1984 in an attempt to stop it. But the android, human-looking if very large, seems unstoppable. This early James Cameron film was partly inspired by a couple of "Outer Limits" episodes written by Harlan Ellison: "Soldier" and "Demon with a Glass Hand."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar

In this movie, two beings arrive in the mid-1980s from the future, one, a cyborg, to eliminate the mother of a post-apocalyptic war hero, the other, a human resistance fighter, to protect her, for the respective reasons of precluding the hero's birth and ensuring it. A relationship develops between the protector (named Kyle Reese) and the protected (Sarah Connor) as they try to defeat the Terminator while Sarah tries to come to terms with her future. Lots of action as the two groups attempt to eliminate each other.
William Hamilton, Resident Scholar

Arnold, playing the killer robot called the "Terminator", is looking for Sarah Connor.
