| Review Summary |
The story begins with the New Republic beginning negotiations with a new alien race, the Yevetha. Princess Leia, who is at the time President of the New Republic, is in discussions with the Yevetha representative/leader, Viceroy Nil Spaar. The discussions turn out to be a ruse--Nil Spaar is only interested in testing the resolve of the New Republic before the Yevetha begin a large campaign of destruction and conquest.
Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker is getting restless with all the demands on his time at the Jedi Academy, and decides to go into hiding to meditate. During his seclusion he is found by another Jedi-like person, Akanah, who claims to an adept of another Force-like power, The White Current. She convinces Luke to accompany her on a search for her long-lost people, the Fallanassi, claiming that his mother might be among them.
The third major story is about Lando investigating a strange ship that disappears whenever approached. He is assisted by C3PO, R2-D2, and Lobot, who was last seen on Cloud City in the Empire Strikes Back.
Han Solo does not do much in the first book--he basically baby-sits the kids while Leia is working. Chewbacca goes back to his home planet to visit his family, and is basically taken out of the first two books.
