Review Summaries
"Maeve, a 15 year-old girl is disgruntled and depressed when she is sent for the summer to her aunt's house in Newfoundland while her parents try to work out problems in their marriage and careers, mostly caused by her rebellious older brother. After a while though she warms up to Newfoundland's rustic charms and starts to feel a certain connection to her favourite grandmother, now dead. Maeve's grandmother turns out to be the author of a book about the secret world of Annwn and Maeve is delighted to discover her grandmother's diary and a beautiful Celtic brooch that was hidden along with it in a bureau. Through the brooch and her own enigmatic, magical qualities, she begins shifting back and forth between Newfoundland and another dimension of Celtic and Welsh myth, the same world that he Grandmother had written about, Annwn. She is befriended by Thomas, a native boy of Annwn about her age and his community, but panic soon engulfs the land as the evil sea-dwelling creatures, the Fomori, bent on subjugating Annwn drive forth Thomas' people from their homes. When things are looking bleakest for her friends, she and Thomas mount a bold journey to enlist the help of the fairy people. "
