Review Summaries
"Aidan Thomas is a high-schooler who has pretty much accepted the fact that he will never be popular. He is short, plump, and not in any way “cool.” However, he somehow managed to befriend the “Mr. Popular,” the high school superstar, which gave him some sort of acceptance in the “popular” crowd. Aidan knows it is all he will ever get, and he is content. Things change when Aidan's grandfather becomes ill, and the family moves to Colorado to take care of him. Aidan is miserable. He is away from his best friend and whatever attention he was getting from other kids, he is lonely and bored. Trying to find something to do, he explores grandpa's basement and finds three old scrolls. The scrolls tell a story of two kingdoms, Alleble and Paragory. Paragory, named after its ruler, the evil Paragor, has attacked Alleble and is fighting to get dominion over The Realm. The story sounds so real that Aidan begins to think that The Realm and the kingdoms do exist. He shares his excitement with his father, but the father dismisses the scrolls as a fairy tale. But Aidan's grandfather has a different opinion. He says that the kingdoms are real, and believing in it will open the door to The Realm. As Aidan reads the last line of the last scroll, “Believe and enter,” he disappears and slips into the world of Alleble. Since Aidan already knows a lot about the war, he quickly chooses the side: he will fight for the King of Alleble, not Paragor who is actually a rebel: he used to serve the king but betrayed him, wishing to rule The Realm himself. As he joins the war, Aidan is surprised to see that he is not that hopeless as he would have been in his own world: he is quite a good fighter. He is noticed, and chosen by the king himself to be the Twelfth Knight, a part of the elite group of warriors defending the land. Aidan goes through training under Captain Valithor and, with his skills and knowledge improved even more, receives his first assignment. He must go to the kingdom of Mithegard and convince its king not to form an alliance with Paragor. Aidan will not be alone on that mission; among his helpers is Gwenne, a beautiful lady-warrior with whom he of course falls in love. "
