Review Summaries
" The major attraction in this thriller is the cast: Robert De Niro plays David Calloway, a recently widowed psychologist trying to get on with his life after his wife's suicide. He is concerned with the well-being of his young daughter, Emily (Dakota Fanning), who is traumatized by her mother's death. Deciding it would be best to start over in a new location, David moves the two of them from Manhattan to a bucolic small town. Once they move into a lovely, rambling home, they being to meet the locals, including the realtor who found them their house, the sheriff and their next-door neighbors. David even meets an attractive woman whose niece is the same age as his daughter. Emily, however, doesn't seem to be letting go of the past. The taciturn child begins to talk about an imaginary playmate named Charlie. At first Charlie seems rather benign, but his actions become increasingly hostile. David surmises Charlie is Emily's alter ego, whom she has dreamt up to express hostility about her mother's absence. He even has Emily's therapist from the city come up for a visit, in the hope that she can figure out why Emily has conjured up Charlie. Soon, though, David begins to worry that Charlie may be a neighbor, the realtor, the sheriff or even a magical being. David realizes he must confront Charlie -- no matter who or what he is -- if Emily is going to get better."
